Are you in the right class?

This message covers three areas:

  • Are you in the right class? As children get older, we have more suitable options.
  • Are you training enough? Most students from 9 years train twice per week.
  • Do you have the right syllabus books? We have different books for different grades.

Are you in the right class?

We have different classes for different age groups. As children (in particular) get older, it is important to ensure that they are in the correct class, because their needs and abilities change, and we have classes designed for different levels.

There is no fixed point when a child is required to move classes. We recommend that students try the new class a couple of times, and change if the class works for them.

Remember that our full schedule resumes from Saturday 2 February 2019.

3-5 year olds, Taekwon-Do Kubz

  • Saturdays, 9-10am, at Churchill Park School.

Our Taekwon-Do Kubz class is targeted at young children. It emphasises behaviour, and many aspects of safety for children, such as dealing with bullies and with adults. Taekwon-Do exercises are fun, and we don’t emphasis technical correction.

Students move to the next age group when they are about 5 or 6 years old.

6-8 year olds, Taekwon-Do kids

  • Monday or Tuesday, 5-6pm, at Churchill Park School.

This class focusses on the basic techniques of Taekwon-Do. We still aim to work on communication and behaviour, and on safety with bullies and adults. It is ideal for white belts up to yellow stripe.

Once a student reaches yellow stripe, it is time to try the next class. Those who are 8 years old will probably be ready for the next class. Those who are 7 or younger may prefer to stay in this class until they reach yellow belt. Once a child reaches yellow belt, he or she should move to the next class.

These classes often use games to teach the skills of Taekwon-Do, as well as Taekwon-Do exercises.

9-12 year olds, Taekwon-Do for older children

  • Kohimarama School, Mondays 6:00-7:30pm and Thursdays 6-7pm;
  • Glendowie Primary School, Mondays and Wednesdays 6:00-7:30pm;
  • Churchill Park School, Tuesdays 6-7pm and Thursdays 5-6pm.

Classes for this age are targeted at coloured belts of all ranks. Different classes have different mixes of grades, so some classes may suit children better than others. For example, Kohimarama School presently has students up to yellow belt, while Glendowie Primary School has students up to red belt.

From this age group, most students train twice per week (pricing may differ, see below). Students are able to mix and match classes across the venues to suit their schedules.

These classes focus on Taekwon-Do (including self-defence) and spend little time on games for children.

13 years and older, Taekwon-Do for youths and adults

  • Tuesdays 7:00-8:30pm and Thursdays 6:00-7:30pm at Churchill Park School.

These classes are targeted at older students who are white belts and coloured belts. Students in this age group tend to be self-motivated, and eager to train hard. Exercises are fun and challenging, and we don’t play games. Students as young as 11 or 12 from green belt do well in this class only if they train hard.

Parents and children

  • Saturdays 10:00-11:30am at Churchill Park School.

This class is fantastic! It is open to children between about 5 and 10 years old who train with their parents. Adults tend to progress more quickly than children. Adults in this class are willing to participate in a class that is less challenging than an adult class, because they enjoy the chance to participate in an organised activity with their own children.

Are you training enough?

Most children in the Kubz and kids’ classes train once per week. Most students in the older age groups train twice per week or more.

These are not fixed rules. Some children under 8 train twice per week, and a few students over 8 can only attend once per week.

Of course, the more we practice, the better we get. By the time I was yellow belt, I was training 4 times per week!

Note that an individual training once per week costs $50 per month, and training twice per week is $70 per month. There is no difference in price for families. Email Master Banicevich if you would like to change your training frequency.

Do you have the right syllabus books?

There are different syllabus books for different levels, and different aspects of Taekwon-Do. Specifically, students will need a new syllabus book when:

  • They move from Kubz to Taekwon-Do Kids;
  • They attain yellow belts;
  • They attain black stripe (or red belt).

There are also additional books we recommend from or earlier.

All books are $20, available from Master Banicevich. (Some books may increase in price during 2019.)
